Let's Be Friends

We officially became crazy cat people earlier in the month, when we adopted our third cat.   It took a few days for everyone to settle in (it took 24 hours for Zoot to come out of the bedroom closet), but everyone is getting on pretty well now.  As we hoped, Zoot and the new girl, Janice, play together, giving Abby some peace.

(scallop); Stamp: Autumn Leaves (journaling block); Enamel Dots: MME; Sequins: Studio Calico (wood grain); Stickers: Bella Blvd. (Family Forever, Lucky Starz); gesso

I've been thinking of getting a larger cat tower for awhile. With the addition of a third cat, it seemed that it was time. It was a good call. As soon as Glenn finished putting it together, all three cats jumped on.

Logwood Leafprints

My knitting has definitely slowed down over the last month.  I had a cold that sapped everything out of me, and the thought of knitting lace, even simple lace, was too daunting.  Slowly but surely, though, I worked my way through the pattern. I managed to finish and get my Leafprints Shawlette (pattern by Anne Hanson) done and blocked before the new kitty came to stay.

Knit using Spencer Hill Spinning & Dyeing Pippi in logwood.  The yarn was a gift from my good friend Hezzie.

Cake Tasting

I'll admit it. I really liked my last layout.  It was hard getting back into my scrap room because I felt that anything I would do next would be a disappointment. But I'm a scrapper, and I somehow managed to make myself play with paper yet again.

I used the Studio Calico March 2014 kit to scrap some pics I snapped when we were at a cake tasting for our wedding way back in May 2011:

Supplies: Studio Calico (All that Glitters, Gingham) and BasicGrey papers; EK Success banner and 1 3/8" circle punches; doily; AC Trademarks (Eddie) rubons; October Afternoon label; Studio Calico sequins, red flowers, flower stamp; Colorbox pigment ink; white embossing powder; Tim Holtz Distress Ink (chipped sapphire); Mister Huey's (navy, opaque white); SU! marker (night of navy); Sharpie

Four Eyes

As I get older, I've found that I can't rely on my contacts as much as I have for the last twenty-some years, and I have been wearing my glasses more and more. It's difficult for me, since I'm very self-conscious in them.  I did a layout about this subject recently.  I took a selfie and layered a color and black and white version (idea courtesy of Get It Scrapped's Masterful Scrapbook Design's Photo Play class).

Supplies: Studio Calico papers, veneer buttons; Farmhouse Paper Company chipboard glasses; various chipboard alphas (Heidi Swapp, Cosmo Cricket); black acrylic paint; Tim Holtz Distress Ink (black soot, pumice stone); embroidery floss; Webster's Pages arrow stamp; Fiskars "notes" stamp; Technique Tuesday journaling stamp; Queen & Co. twinkle stars; Twine & Ink enamel dots; Staples roller date stamp; American Crafts Precision Pen 03

Another day another layout. I redid a layout from last summer that I wasn't happy with. It's a very special moment (closing on our first home), but the only picture I had was small and dark and hard to scrap.  Here's my latest attempt:

For the design, I was influence by the article at Get It Scrapped about bracket foundations.  I also used some ideas found in the latest Masterful Scrapbook Design class on Photo Play.

And I did another process video:

Supplies: Crate (Close Knit, Flea Market DIY Shop) papers and embellishments; We R Memory Keepers gold vellum; Sizzix die; Creative Cafe pearls; Mister Huey's (opaque white, warm calico); Technique Tuesday (Big Timber) stamps; Staples date stamp; EK Success banner punch; hemp twine; acrylic paint.

While I was working, Glenn came in to compose:

And for comparison purposes, this is the layout I redid:

Lots of New Things

New paper, new layout. My box from Two Peas came today with BasicGrey's new Bon Ami paper line. I love the cityscapes, perfect for pictures of my husband playing jazz at a new gig.

Supplies: BasicGrey Mon Ami papers and stickers; BasicGrey alphas; Twine & Ink puffy hearts; MME decorative tape; Tim Holtz Distress Ink (black soot); Heidi Swapp Color Shine (tinsel, gold lame); Fiskars "love this" stamp; Staples roller date stamp; EK Success 1-inch circle punch; Simon Says Stamp star stencil

And something else new. I decided to try my hand at amateur scrapbooking process videos. Two-hours of pointing and clicking and I managed to do something in iMovie.  Lots to learn if I'm going to try this again.  I do get a lot of questions about how I did a certain technique, so maybe this will answer some of them.

There's a flurry of scrapbooking going on over at the Get It Scrapped boards this month, as the members participate in a free-for-all.  I wasn't planning on participating, since the chaotic nature of the game makes me want to break out in hives, but I've decided to at least dip my toe in. This way, all the crazy conversations surrounding the game may make sense.

Bonus point for doing a layout with Calvin & Hobbes and the shelf in my office provided me with the perfect layout:

It's pretty rare that I'll use speech bubbles or a primary color scheme in a layout, but it worked well with the comic book theme.  I printed my title below the photograph, and made multiple copies so I could layer all the pieces up and give it some dimension.  I also went over the title with acrylic paint to give a bit more of a handwritten feel.

Supplies: Jenni Bowlin and Bo Bunny papers; The Crafter's Workshop stencil; Tim Holtz Distress Ink (black soot, barn door); Studio Calico, Hero Arts, Chic Tags, and Two Peas/Shimelle Laine stamps; American Crafts MiniMarks rubons (Frank); and MME enamel dots

The other layout I finished this week is a complete one-eighty in style.  Glenn snapped a few pictures at his recording session last month and I wanted to include them in my scrapbook.  I always struggle with lowlight pictures. I may go back and print these in black and white to work better in the layout. I tried bringing in some gold in the background, but it doesn't look like there is enough.

I created the background with a stencil and black acrylic paint. Then I took a dauber and red, purple and gold acrylic paint for a bokah effect.  I should get extra points for using ancient stash. Those rub ons have been around for awhile.

Supplies: Echo Park (Times & Seasons 2) and American Crafts (Chap) papers; Tim Hotlz bubble stencil, Distress Ink (black soot); acrylic paint; Heidi Swapp Color Shine (gold lame); Fiskars and Studio Calico stamps; American Crafts Mini Marks rub ons (Frank); drew drops
